Azam allay Dube injury fears

TANZANIA’S Azam FC assistant coach Vivier Bahati has allayed fears that Warriors striker Prince Dube was injured on Wednesday in his team’s clash with Rhino Rangers in the quarter-finals of the Azam Sports Federation Cup.

Dube was pulled out in the eighth minute and several news outlets reported that Dube had suffered an injury, but Bahati told a Swahili publication, Soka la bongo, that the striker got into the game with a stomach ache which worsened and had to be pulled out.

“(Prince) Dube is fine. Before the game, he was suffering from a stomach ache, but it was okay and he started playing. During the game, his stomach ached again, so he was released and given care, but now he is fine,” Bahati said.

Azam beat second-tier division side Rhino Rangers 3-1 in the tournament to proceed to the finals, where they take on Simba SC.

In October last year, Dube missed a Warriors’ friendly match against Malawi due to a hamstring injury he suffered during a league match.

The following month, he sustained a hand injury and had to undergo surgery in South Africa and was out of action for Azam for six weeks.

Early this year, he suffered another hamstring injury, forcing him to miss the Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers against Botswana and Zambia.

Dube’s scoring prowess in Tanzania saw him still attract the attention of Warriors’ gaffer Zdravko Logarušić, who called him up for the Fifa World Cup qualifiers that were set to start in June, but were rescheduled to September.

The former Highlanders striker is scoring for fun in the Tanzania Vodacom League and leads the scorers’ chart with 14 goals, with Simba SC forward Meddie Kagere lurking behind with
11 goals.

Azam FC, who sit on position three on the league log with 60 points, are left with four games and Simba, who were taking part in the Caf Champions League, are left with nine games and lead the pack with 61 points. Dube is targeting the Golden Boot Award.
