The Liberian government has praised Zimbabwean businessman Frank Buyanga Sadiqi for providing food aid to the Liberian community resident in South Africa facing lockdown-induced hunger.
Buyanga, through his company, African Medallion Group handed over the food parcels to the Liberian community on Sunday.
In a letter gleaned by NewsDay, Liberian ambassador to South Africa, Ethel Davies said the gesture by Buyanga was an expression of African solidarity to be celebrated on May 25.
“I present my compliments and wish to express on behalf of the government of Liberia and that of the embassy of Liberia our sincere thanks and appreciation to you for the humanitarian gesture shown on Sunday, May 16 towards Liberian families living in Yeovil, Johannesburg,” Davies said.
“The Liberian government views your timely intervention to distribute food parcels to needy Liberians during these challenging times of the COVID-19 lockdown in South Africa not only as a display of African unity, especially during this month of May which is Africa month but it also shows the love and kindness you have towards your fellowman.” African Medallion Group chief executive officer Itai Maunganidze said: “African Medallion Group gets strength from helping the community and the situation we observed is that most people are facing several challenges during this COVID-19 lockdown and we need to be our brother’s keeper.”
Chairperson of the Liberian community Laye Kamara said the help from Buyanga demonstrated African solidarity.
Buyanga recently donated to thousands of Zimbabwean families living in South Africa facing similar challenges. He also donated more than US$5 million to the Zimbabwe government to fight the COVID-19 pandemic.
