FIFTY-ONE people cheated death yesterday when a Kakono bus they were travelling in hit two cattle at a bridge before plunging into Shangani River along the Nkayi-Gokwe Road in Matabeleland North province.

National police spokesperson Assistant Commissioner, Paul Nyathi confirmed the accident saying the bus hit two beasts before the driver lost control.

“Fifty-one people were injured in a bus accident which was travelling along Nkayi-Gokwe Road from Bulawayo to Gokwe on Sunday. The driver saw a herd of cattle on the bridge (but) he failed to stop and hit two of them before the bus landed on its side in the river,” he said.

“Fourteen people escaped unhurt including the driver.”

Nyathi said those injured were taken to Nkayi District Hospital.

Provincial medical director Pugie Chimberengwa said: “Out of the 51 injured, two males were severely injured and were transferred to Mpilo Hospital where we are yet to get information about their condition. The rest had minor injuries and we are still monitoring their conditions before we can discharge them.”
