GOVERNMENT says it will soon review the curriculum at Youth Vocational Training Centres so that it is in line with modern trends.

This was revealed by Youth, Sport, Arts and Culture permanent secretary Thokozile Chitepo when she appeared before the Mathias Tongofa-chaired Parliamentary Portfolio Committee on Youth Sport, Arts and Culture to speak on 2020 budget bids.

“We are currently doing a review of the youth policy and by the end of October, we will have completed it and expect that it will be operational next year, and the amendments to the Youth Council Act is also on our agenda,” Chitepo said.

“We will also introduce a youth volunteer strategy and the National Youth Service curriculum is going to be reviewed as well as coming up with a vocational training centres (VTCs) master plan that will outline infrastructure requirements, programmes to be done and staff requirements for VTCs.”

But Tongofa blasted the Youth ministry for taking ages to come up with a Youth Act.

“The Constitution was promulgated six years ago and you still do not have a single law from your ministry that has been aligned with the Constitution. For example, the Ministry of Finance said there will be repealing of the Indigenisation Act to make way for the Empowerment Act,” Tongofa said.

Chitepo said while the indigenisation Act was no longer under the purview of the Youth and Sports ministry, it would be important for her ministry to have an input on the Act to ensure that youths benefited from empowerment programmes.

Proportional representative legislator Tatenda Mavetera (Zanu PF) said the curriculum at VTCs was too archaic and not in line with modern trends and technology.

“We have already received funding for the review of the VTC curriculum and have already reviewed 10 courses to make them modern and relevant with the support from the Chinese government,” she said.
