About 2 500 calculators, sourced from renowned electronic manufacturing company Casio, have been released to about 19 schools across Nyanga District.

Henry Chitsenga, who is currently in the country, said the donation was meant to empower students in rural schools. “I am donating the calculators in order for the students and teachers to be able to do the new syllabus and also bring Nyanga district schools on the international technology map. This is to bridge the gap between students in the developing economies and those in developed world. These children deserve the best and despite most of them being in marginalised communities, I am happy that they have something to smile about,” he said.

Chitsenga added that Casio has promised to release more calculators for Nyanga students as well as those who were affected by the March 15, Cyclone Idai-induced floods in Chimanimani and Chipinge. The donation will also see teachers across Nyanga district being trained on how to use the latest gadgets at a two-day workshop this week. Some of the schools that have benefitted so far include Gairezi, Nyafaru, Fombe, Kazozo and Mazarura secondary schools among others.

The latest gadgets include the 64 FX-CG20 Graphical Display calculators for A-level students and 35FX-CG50 Teachers’ Graphical Display.

Chitsenga, who is a Mathematics teacher in the United Kingdom said by next week more than 30 schools will have received the calculators.

“About 19 schools have so far benefited and by next week at least 34 schools will be covered. So far I have donated 1 400 calculators and by Friday it will rise to about 2 500. It is my dream to make sure that every student in Nyanga District gets a calculator,” he said.
