Guruve woman assaults husband’s second wife

A 26-YEAR-OLD Guruve woman appeared before a Guruve magistrate on Friday last week for allegedly assaulting her husband’s second wife with a brick on the head in a fit of rage.

Shupikai Jackson (26) of Beris Post pleaded guilty to the charge before resident magistrate Shingirai Mutiro, who sentenced her to five months in prison, but wholly suspended on condition that she did not commit a similar offence in the next five years.

Public prosecutor Spiwe Makarichi told the court that on 18 September 2018 and at Beris Post village, Jackson met Scolastic Zhanda (28), who is the second wife of her husband Makunike Madzinga (38), and accused her of getting more money to support her family yet she only had one child with Madzinga.

Jackson, who has three children, flew into a rage and picked up a half brick, which she used to strike Zhanda on the head before fleeing.

Zhanda failed to seek medication as she had no money.

The magistrate took into consideration that she was a first offender who needed time to reform.

In another case, Maidei Jamu (27) of Chizinde village, Chief Chipuriri, Guruve, appeared before the same magistrate for stealing two goat kids valued at $10.

Jemu pleaded guilty to a stock theft charge and was sentenced to six months imprisonment, five suspended on good behaviour and an additional one month suspended on condition that she pays $100 fine or risk going to jail for 30 days.

The court heard that on 17 October Jamu picked two goat kids belonging to Shadreck Chiwerana (34) and kept them for four days at her homestead.

In mitigation, she told the magistrate that she did not know the owner of the goat kids, hence taking them into her custody.

In sentencing, Mutiro said: “You started crime at the deep-end; stock theft is a serious offence, however, today we give you time to reform as a first offender.”
