Descent Chiku (20), who denied the attempted rape charge, was remanded in custody to September 17.

The State led by prosecutor Spiwe Makarichi alleges that last Tuesday at around 10pm, Chiku was asked to follow up his niece who had stormed out of her parents’ home at a farm in Mvurwi following a misunderstanding with her mother.

The accused caught up with the complainant and tried to convince her to go back home, but she refused.

Chiku gave up and turned his back against the complainant and walked away before turning back and demanding to sleep with her.

Chiku allegedly grabbed the complainant by the collar and tried to rape her, before nearby villagers came to her rescue after she screamed for help.

The accused reportedly vanished into the dark and the complainant rushed to the police station to file a report, leading to Chiku’s arrest the following day.
