Presidential election results out in 5 days: Zec

THE Zimbabwe Electoral Commission (Zec) has allayed public fears of delayed election results, saying next month’s presidential election outcome would be announced within five days.

BY KENNETH NYANGANI

Zec Manicaland provincial boss, Moffart Masabeya, made the remarks at an all stakeholders’ meeting, last week, after the electorate demanded guarantees that Zec would not delay election results for more than two months as was the case with the March 2008 presidential election outcome.

“We don’t want to dwell too much on history, if we are working backwards then we are not moving forward and results of the Presidential elections will be announced within five days. We are confident on what we have and the message should be clear,” he said.

Masabeya said Manicaland has 1 140 polling stations that will be used during the harmonised elections.

Results of the first round of the 2008 presidential elections were only released after two months with no outright winner between then Zanu PF leader Robert Mugabe and the now late MDC-T leader Morgan Tsvangirai.

Mugabe controversially won the the re-run election after Tsvangirai pulled out of the race citing persecution of his supporters by suspected State security agents and Zanu PF militia.

  1. Vote Chamisa for President

Why 5days given that the counting of elections will start the in the evening of the 30th of July!I am sensing danger

  2. five days is too much. compiling what has been counted and pasted outside polling stations shld take that much long.

  3. If it is going to take a day for 5.5 million people to vote, counting and verification and announcing must not take more than 2 days. The voting process is actually longer than the counting.

  4. Zimbos, in an electronic electoral exercise, results are streamed live on TV. The electoral commission therefore will just be expected to certify what is already in the public domain. Unless Zimbabwe’s law dictates otherwise, the ballots are tallied at the polling station. The results are then sent to the constituency tallying center for certification and documentation. The returning officer then sends these results directly to the transmission center as s/he receives them. Unless they are adulterated at the polling station or hacked midway, the results are viewed live by the public cumulatively as they come. The electoral commission at the national level has no mandate to alter anything alter the electoral database. Days of withholding the results or busting the public with cooked results are a thing of the past.

  5. The writer did not write well this story . He should add that , when Rob Bob the election robber held his shame 2008 rerun / one man race , the results were out plus inoguration within 48 hours. The same Zec presided over all that. So 5 days is a joke frome Zec ,they are taking people for a ride. Pliz Zec be serious or we are going to think otherwise.

    1. Read the English well “Youthforzim”, within 5 days means from 1 day to 5 days, so there is nothing to worry about here.

  6. Hey, “within 5 days” means even in a day. Hakuna kunzi after 5 days kana kuti in 5 days, hanzi within 5 days.

    1. Thats totally wrong…. Its should be changed to be within one day. Why have to be that long

  7. The world over most results are known withing minutes of polls closing. 5 days? Doing what exactly? Cooking the books like you did in 2008? Motanga kutiudza kuti there are 100000 voters in Maramba Pfungwe when you and I know kuti vanhu vese vakatizira Harare plus you can drive 10km uchingoona musha one. Then wonzi all these people voted. Nxa. Mbavha

  11. ZANU PF chiwororo

  13. In Kenya, we are 19,000,000 registered voters and we always know the winner of the presidential election within 2 days…So ZEC 5 days for only 5,000,000 voters? A joke of a century. In Kenya, when there are delays, we know figures are being cooked in favor of the incumbent. Africa, Oh Africa my mother land! When shall we ever get anything right?
