A BULAWAYO City Council (BCC) official and an illegal foreign currency dealer, popularly known as osiphatheleni – appeared in court last week after they were allegedly caught red-handed exchanging money on the streets.

Abigail Mathe (31) and council employee Sikhumuzo Dube (49), appeared before Bulawayo magistrate Franklin Mkhwananzi last week charged with illegal dealing in currency. They were granted $30 bail.

The court heard that on March 20, the two were caught red-handed conducting an illegal money exchange transaction at corner 8th Avenue and Herbert Chitepo Street by patrol police officers from Bulawayo Central Police Station.

Mathe was searched and was found in possession of $20, R100 and $102 bond notes
