No political interference in awarding of degrees: Murwira

HIGHER and Tertiary Education minister Amon Murwira has declared zero tolerance to political interference in the awarding of degrees at State institutions.

BY NUNURAI JENA

Addressing stakeholders at Chinhoyi University of Technology last week, Murwira said the awarding of certificates and degrees was the prerogative of the Senate of universities.

“Academic processes at universities like issuing of degrees is the prerogative of the Senate and when we say no to political interference, it’s clear that we don’t want interference in academic processes at universities,” he said.

This came in the wake of controversy generated by the University of Zimbabwe after it awarded a PhD to former First Lady Grace Mugabe amid reports that her research thesis did not meet the minimum standards.

After being awarded the degree four years ago, Grace’s research thesis was only displayed in the university library this year, after lecturers from the department of sociology petitioned vice-chancellor Levi Nyagura.

In a veiled attack which appeared directed at Grace, Murwira said degrees should be earned on merit.

Murwira said students on attachment would continue to pay full fees because their fees were used to pay accommodation fees for their assessors’ stay in hotels.

“When a student is on attachment the student is still learning and must pay because those who assess them need to travel and put up in hotels,” he said.

Murwira also said the students’ education loan scheme was now operational to cushion students against the harsh economic environment.

  1. That is cheap talk. My question is what is murwira going to do about grace’s fake degree and more importantly what action is he going to take against corrupt nyagura. The people of zimbabwe are wondering why nyagura is being protected despite having committed such a shameless act of corruption. So, who does murwira think he is fooling by pretending that he is against such corruption yet he is doing nothing about it? Murwira thinks the people of zimbabwe are fools and he is the smart guy. Whats wrong with these political professors? Could they be fake as well?

  2. Political professors might be fake l believe so. I look at Jonso then l wonder why on earth a person who claims to be so much learned would reduce himself to so low levels. How Jonso could end up being Mugabes song writer? You look at how Murwira is handling the Gire issue and then you say is it that we have enrolled a form 6 student into ecd thus he is not sure of what he should be doing there. Listen to Nyaguras comment on lecturers request then as an outsider you wonder how these PHDs are issued. You then realise and come to appreciate why as a country we are where we are because if institutions of higher learning leaders whose reasoning and problem solving skills are expected to be high end up exposing their lack of discourse then you dont need to extend your research.
