GWERU town clerk Elizabeth Gwatipedza has said council is seeking to engage residents in a storm drain clean-up campaign as the rainy season begins.

Gwatipedza said involving residents in council projects not only empowers the community, but saves funds given that the local authority is cash strapped.
“We are working on modalities to engage community members in cleaning storm drains,” she said.
“It is our feeling as council that considering community engagement for small programmes is cheaper given our dire financial position.”
Over the years the city has been known for poor maintenance of the drainage system that has led to pavements and tarred roads flooding during the rainy season.
In March this year, houses in most high-density suburbs were flooded with some residents losing property as a result of excess run-off water.
The excess storm water has also led to burst sewage pipes in the past.
