HIGH Court judge Justice Priscilla Chigumba has granted an interdict to stop the Judicial Service Commission (JSC) from proceeding with interviews for the appointment of a new Prosecutor-General (PG) to replace the incumbent Ray Goba.

Chigumba granted the order yesterday following an urgent chamber application by the Zimbabwe Lawyers for Human Rights (ZLHR), which argued that the government’s move to reverse Goba’s appointment as substantive PG was unprocedural.

Former President Robert Mugabe last month reversed Goba’s appointment through an Extraordinary Government Gazette.

“The human rights organisation contended that the PG can only be removed from office by the President upon the advice of a tribunal set up in terms of section 187 of the Constitution and that the Constitution does not provide another different route that can be followed to remove the PG from office,” ZLHR lawyer Advocate Eric Matinenga submitted.
