Mlungisi Mphengesi (20), a 17-year-old juvenile, Mphathisi Tshuma (20), Ayanda Moyo (20), Calton Mutusva (19) and Luckmore Ncube (18) were denying the charges of attempted murder when they appeared before regional magistrate Mark Dzira in Beitbridge. The magistrate, however, convicted them at the close of the State’s case.

In the first count, Dzira sentenced each member to seven years in jail before suspending two years for five years on condition of good behaviour.

In the other count, he sentenced them to 21 months in jail each.

Dzira, however, ruled that the 21-month jail terms would run concurrently with the five-year jail terms, meaning they will each serve an effective five years in jail.

Prosecutor Munyonga Kuvarega alleged that the six on June 15 this year were at Kalahari Sports Bar in Beitbridge when they attempted to kill Goodknows Zonke by striking him twice on the head with machetes and several times with empty beer bottles and chairs.

The court was also told that on the same day, the six also attacked Nathan Chirwa with machetes on both hands and several times on the head with empty bottles and chairs.

A report made to the police, which led to their arrest.
