Cabinet reshuffle: Much ado about nothing

On Monday we warned that there was nothing to be excited in President Robert Mugabe’s planned reshuffle and we feel vindicated now, as the President simply moved around the same old faces, with literally nothing new to offer.

Instead of bringing in new blood, Mugabe returned the old tired faces, who have not inspired in their previous portfolios and we wonder why he thinks they will be stars in their new ministries.

To add insult to injury, Mugabe literally created two more ministries – the Cybersecurity ministry under Patrick Chinamasa and the National Scholarships ministry to be headed by Christopher Mushohwe.

There was absolutely no need for the two ministries and they are an added burden on an already handicapped Treasury.

Just moving people around is not enough and in the circumstances, Mugabe must have looked for the best brains to the run the ministries.

New Finance minister Ignatius Chombo has been around the block for a while and Zimbabweans are hard-pressed to point out any of his successes either as Higher Education, Local Government or Home Affairs minister and it boggles the mind why he has been given the Treasury keys.

New Public Service minister Patrick Zhuwao has also not been a beacon of excellence in his previous role, as he infamously tried to railroad the indigenisation laws with little regard for the economy.

Mugabe had to rap him on the knuckles over that fiasco, which continues to hang over the country like the sword of Damocles and we wonder what he has done to deserve this new post.

The President’s reshuffle is as uninspiring as it is worrying, as all his ministers have been there and supervised the country’s collapse.

The new ministers lack the “wow factor”, they do not raise hope and above all point to stagnation and lack of fresh ideas. What Zimbabwe is desperate for is a regenerated and re-energised Cabinet, but instead, Mugabe gives a host of has-beens, who are not likely to change anything.

We have spoken ad nauseam about the need to bring in technocrats and professionals, who have the know-how and are unencumbered by politics and patronage.

Tragically, our calls and the cries of many Zimbabweans are ignored, as the ruling elite are only concerned about self-preservation and populism.

Zimbabwe is on the precipice and only inspired leaders can bring the country back from the brink, however, with this new Cabinet, we have very little confidence that there can be any sort of turnaround.

  1. Comment…Bringing in technocrats will not change anything because its Gushungo who decides everything. He, who pays the piper decides the tune. Gushungo has done his bit and a new broom is needed

      1. What does Chombo know about finance. All we know about him is the corruption at ZUPCO whilst minister of transport, dubious land deals as the local government ministry. This government rewards incompetence remember Chigwedere.

  2. It was a dump squib, saw the resurgency of Cremora ,the relegation of Chinamasa who has been battling to cut the civil service wage bill and the VP ED who had a key ministry stolen from him and reassigned and to crown it all Chidarikire was punished for once upon a time erroneously introducing Auxillia as the First Lady

  4. kkkk, this time Cremora has even returned with white hair on his head, honestly what can he do now in old age that he failed to do last time when he was still a spring chicken?

  5. No inspiration required. Nothing special needed. All these countries around sadc and throughout the world don’t have unusually specialised individuals. Only commonsense, which is not easily accessible to or available in rgm. Inga vakuru vakati ushe madzoro wani.

  8. You see… this is the challenge. Zanu PF simply want to retain power at all costs… hence the appointments! Even if cajoled or intimidated, do not vote Zanu PF, period.

  9. I think the sad thing about this whole reshuffle is that Mugabe creates ministries for what should be departments of ministries. How can cyber security, scholarships etc be ministries in their own right? And this for a very poor country which cannot afford such luxury.
And then after all that serial failure Chombo gets the finance ministry.

  10. Let me just say Zimbabwe is fulfilling the scriptures, Revelations, end of life.

  16. THE COUNTRY IS GONE TO THE DOGS, HOW DO YOU EXPECT CHOMBO TO RUN FINANCE, HE DOES NOT KNOW A THING ABOUT FINANCE. I THINK OUR INDUSTRY LEADERS, THEY TOO ARE NOT EDUCATED, IN MODERN ECONOMIES APPOINTMENT OF PEOPLE IN FINANCE POSITIONS WITHOUT KNOWLEDGE LEADS TO HAVOC IN THE ECONONMY. IN ZIMBABWE ITS JUST NORMAL. BEWARE, CHOMBO IS GOING TO EMPTY ALL YOUR MONEY HELD BY THE RBZ TO OIL THE ZANU PF CAMPAIGN MACHINERY. DO YOU THINK CHOMBO WILL SAY NO AFTER RECEIVING A REQUEST FOR FUNDS FROM MUGABE AND ZANU PF. CHINAMASA WAS NOW UNPOPULAR FOR REFUSING TO FUND NON BUDGETTED EXPENDITURES, BUT WITH CHOMBO ALL WHEELS ARE COMING OFF VERY VERY SOON. I JUST WONDER WHAT ZIMBABWEAN COMPANIES THINK THEY ARE DOING, IS THERE ANYONE WHO IS MAKING MONEY IN THIS COUNTRY, THESE WIRED FUNDS WHICH ARE NOT BACKED UP WITH REAL MONEY, BANK BALANCES WHICH CANNOT BUY ANYTHING OUTSIDE THE COUNTRY.

  17. VERY SOON YOU WILL SEE CHIEFS DRIVING BRAND NEW VEHICLES, WATCH OUT. THIS GOVERNMEMNT HAS SUCCCEEDED IN TAKING ALL YOUR US DOLLARS AND GIVING YOU BOND PAPER. US DOLLARS ARE NOW GOLD AND SCARCE, WHAT REMAINS BOND PAPER
