The resort town’s mayor, Sifiso Mpofu spelt out the business opportunities to Indian, Turkish and Ethiopian delegates at the just-ended Confederation of Zimbabwe Industries (CZI) conference.

Mpofu said the call for investors was driven by recently conferred Special Economic Zone status, which came with a number of flexible conditions for local and foreign investors.

“We stand a chance of improving the cluster development of tourism as an industry and other industries,” he said.

“We also pride ourselves with the state-of-the-art Victoria Falls Airport, which has resulted in the coming in of major airlines, as we have just experienced Kenyan Airways and Ethiopian Airways among others and, as a result, this has added the number of visitors coming into town for tourism activities and investment opportunities and, therefore, we need to build a city hotel, shopping mall, an upmarket civic centre and a theme park.”

Mpofu also invited interested investors to partner with the local authority to upgrade unfinished sporting facilities.

One of them is a 10 000-seater stadium, which was given to Zimbabwe Cricket (ZC) to develop, but for the past three years the land has been lying idle due to financial constraints.

“We have facilities that need to be upgraded and we are looking for partners who will co-operate with us, this includes a 10 000-seater stadium, a soccer pitch, a triathlon track, discus, volleyball, long and triple jump,” he said.

The mayor said they were also looking for investors to take on construction of a community library in Chinotimba, which will have a capacity of 200 inside and outside seats, computer and media room.

Mpofu said Mkhosana suburb needed a fully furnished community hall, which can accommodate 5 000 and the local authority would give land in return.

He said they also needed a pre-paid water distribution and software systems and also the upgrading of water, sewerage infrastructure and rehabilitation of water treatment and equipment.

The Victoria Falls municipality is in the process of applying for city status.
