Thabani Nyathi (22), who pleaded guilty to only one count, was last week sentenced on two counts of sodomy due to overwhelming evidence when he appeared before Hwange regional magistrate, Collet Ncube.

Asked why he committed the offence, Nyathi said he found the boy sexually attractive.

Nyathi was initially sentenced to 12 years in jail before four years were suspended on condition of good behaviour.

Prosecutor Bheki Tshabalala told the court that on January 14 last year, Nyathi waylaid the boy who was herding donkeys in the company of his cousin and sexually abused him.

The matter came to light when the boy’s sister overheard another boy telling his friend of what had happened. She then informed their grandmother and a report made to the police, led to Nyathi’s arrest.
