Tsvangirai, Ncube kiss and make up

MDC-T leader, Morgan Tsvangirai and his MDC counterpart, Welshman Ncube yesterday signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) ahead of next year’s elections, a development that ends a 12-year acrimonious relationship that followed the split of the original MDC in 2005.

DONE DEAL … MDC-T leader, Morgan Tsvangirai (left) shakes hands with his MDC counterpart, Welshman Ncube at the memorandum of understanding signing ceremony at the former’s
residence in Harare yesterday

In an unprecedented show, both Tsvangirai and Ncube apologised to Zimbabweans for causing the infamous split of 2005, which is believed to have contributed to the opposition parties’ successive election defeats by President Robert Mugabe and Zanu PF.

Addressing journalists after the signing ceremony, the two opposition leaders took responsibility for Mugabe’s successive victories in 2008 and 2013, saying had they remained together, Zanu PF would have long been thrown into the political dustbin.

“Today, we continue the journey that we started yesterday (Wednesday) with (National People’s Party [NPP] leader) Joice Mujuru; a journey, whose destination is a democratic, free and prosperous Zimbabwe under a caring government,” Tsvangirai said.

“It would also be equally dishonest not to recognise that in our journey with Ncube, we both made our own mistakes. We split our party in 2005.

“The cost of that vote-splitting, in addition to the blatant manipulation of (election) results, delayed change for the people of Zimbabwe in 2008. It takes humble leadership to accept one’s mistakes, but it takes bold leadership to correct those mistakes.”

Yesterday’s signing ceremony came a day after Tsvangirai made a similar pact with former Vice-President Mujuru, who now heads NPP.

“It is in this respect that I am both relieved and pleased to have signed an MoU with Ncube, as a first step towards undoing the damage we caused ourselves,” Tsvangirai said.

Tsvangirai and Ncube were among the founders of the MDC in 1999 along with other opposition politicians such as the late Gibson Sibanda and People’s Democratic Party leader, Tendai Biti, before the party was hit by two splits in 2005 and 2013.

“Today, Ncube and I will open a new chapter and craft a political agreement that should see us harness and combine our known electoral strengths to face our common opponent as a united front,” the former Prime Minister said.

Tsvangirai vowed that next year, Zanu PF would be confronted by a combined force of opposition parties, who “are sick and tired of Mugabe’s failed leadership”.

“If anyone in this country expects us to contest the next elections separately, as we did in 2008 and 2013 and expect a different result, it will not only be a third moment of real madness, but the highest form of insanity and none of us is insane,” he said.

The MDC-T leader evoked the name of one of Zimbabwe’s founding nationalists, the late Vice-President Joshua Nkomo, as he illustrated how Mugabe and his regime had failed the country.

“However, to embark on this transformation agenda, we need to extricate ourselves from the shackles of the corrosive dictatorship and economic mismanagement gripping our nation State,” Tsvangirai said.

“Father Zimbabwe, Joshua Nkomo, in his memoirs, while exiled in England, wrote something very profound: ‘The hardest lesson of my life has come to me late. It is that a nation can win freedom without its people being free.’ His words still ring true today as they did then.

“As Zimbabweans, we are still not free, but none but ourselves can free ourselves, and to do so we need to work together.”

Ncube, in his remarks, said he took responsibility for the 2005 split, describing the decision by both himself and Tsvangirai as not in the nation’s interest.

“The decisions that we made were clearly not in the national interest in particular in relation to splitting of the MDC that the president (Tsvangirai) referred to,” he said.

“We accept that we divided our people and the vibrancy of the party, which we should not have done.

“I do take responsibility for those mistakes, but what is more important, as it stands, is for us to not just accept those mistakes, but begin to take steps that are necessary for us to be accountable to the people of Zimbabwe.”

Ncube said Zimbabweans were eager for a coalition and the signing of the MoU marked the beginning of that journey.

its a good political move by the two.they dont have to neccessarily love each other to be able to work together.common interest would dictate that they work as one.

Wezhira wezhara is perfectly correct on that one. Remember the UZ,Polytechnic disturbances when students were advocating for Aggrarian reform and the Gvt was tight-lipped on the issue. Moreover the Gvt only gave in when the veterans of the struggle wanted to take land either way. Go and read the various manifestos at that time.

      • Iwe Ka April 21, 2017 at 9:56 am #

Usanyepe. Nkomo is the one who brought the issue of LAND REFORM and he lost elections in 1980. The Whites voted against Nkomo because of that not knowing that it will be against them one day.

      • Kays April 21, 2017 at 12:24 pm #

Wezhira you are very correct. In 1995 when i got into the then Chinhoyi Technical Teachers College, now Chinhoyi University, i pounced on an document that was evaluating the success and failures of ESAP, Tsvangirai in that document was saying ESAP was a dismal failure and was encouraging the government to speed up the process of land reform. He was complaining about the delays. When MDC was formed, it was also advocating the land distribution to the people. The govern ment was then awakened and fast tracked this issue because they had realized that the MDC would gain millage by the issue of land. Because MDC was by then not experienced in politics it was overpowered in this land issue.

@tendai Chaminuka you missed a point. The venue has nothing to do with the MOU because these people, from what I am reading, want Tsvangirai as the Presidential candidate. Whether it was done on the street, the fact remains, but it would have served to denigrate their noble idea. I am ZANU PF but will vote for Tsvangirai as President if Mugabe refuses to go sideways because surely I cannot invest my future and that of my children in a 94 year old person’s hands. That will be the only way to save this country, so Mr Mugabe, please call for an extra-ordinary congress where you shall not be a candidate and people vote through secret ballot. We would accept your counsel as an elder but zvimwe zvawava kuita mudhara iwe does not make sense. we need new blood, take heed from Malema’s speech, that the revolution is not made for one person it has to be handed over to other to continue with it, so all the gains have been overshadowed by the problems in Zim, i am hopeful that the MoUs will bring something better for the country – all the people despite political affiliation. up to today i wonder why people where beaten on the independence day.

  13. William April 21, 2017 at 9:21 am #

@tendai chaminuka I have been seeing your comments for some time now and would want to start by confessing that what I am saying to you now is being influenced not only by your comments on this current discussion but more similar comments from you, that you posted in the past. You sound blinded by the zunufication of national programmes to the extent that you must now be having a different dictionary for terms. Independence was fought for by the generality of Zimbabweans with the major objective to gain political freedom that entitle every citizen equal opportunity and rights over national resources. These rights include the right to political opinion and that of aspiring to lead the people of Zimbabwe and no one party has the sole right to lead the people of Zimbabwe. This idea where everyone who sees the wrong in this ZANU PF government being labelled a puppet of the west of pushing for a western agenda is nothing more than a political gimmick and a trick that has continuously been used to downplay development of the nation. Corruption is happening and can not be corrected because the family of ministers running the country can not deal fairly with such issues. Nepotism, favouritism, chicanery, fraud, murders, thefts, injustice, corruption and moral decay have become the order of the day yet as the lapdogs of the ruling elite you continue to spew false ideologies to erect false images about our poor and insensitive leaders. For once just consider the vast majority of Zimbabweans and begin to advocate for better leadership and good governance!

    • tendai chaminuka April 21, 2017 at 12:11 pm #

@ Marine30 Which better leadership and good governance should I advocate for when your beacon of democracy Morgan Tsvangirai tears apart the constitution of his party by imposing Vice Presidents without the input of party cadres.Saka what will happen if he becomes the State President, an Idi Amin in waiting.Does your democracy allow leaders to abuse women the way our blued eyed boy did.If America could force its C.I.A Head to resign over his affair with his secretary why do they allow their tax payers money to be spent on a opposition leader who is doing the same at a large scale. What it simply means is that there do not care about the moral and good governance of this country. They would not want us to be at the same par with them in terms of HOLINESS.Africa is a dark continent and as such should operate in its dark way.

The generality of Zimbabweans have cried for a united opposition and the different leaders seem to have listened. What then is this noise about? Surely we can’t be blinded and sidetracked by a few clearly misguided who as it shows on this forum are in the majority.

Anyone who thinks the current leadership we have must continue in government can’t be with the people. ZanuPf has had an eternity to steer this country out of our now problems, which are now entrenched. And the party does not seem to have any plan at all while our problems mount.

Surely it is time the people of this country tried a different formula, new ideas, new leadership. Let us all register to vote and put new people in government.
