TEACHERS’ unions have welcomed plans to set up a teaching professions council (TPC), saying it would rid the system of malcontents and standardise the profession.

Speaking during consultative meetings for the establishment of the TPC in Gweru recently, Teachers’ Union of Zimbabwe president, Timon Tandi said the council would enable teachers to ring-fence their profession against non-teachers.
“We can’t allow retired (army) colonels into the profession,” he said.
Progressive Teachers’ Union of Zimbabwe national co-ordinator, Ladistous Zunde said the government was duty-bound to provide a conducive environment to enable different professions to set-up their own regulatory bodies.
“Other professionals like, for example nurses, lawyers and engineers, have their councils and one cannot just wake up and start practising as a nurse and the same should happen in the teaching profession,” he said.
Zimbabwe Teachers’ Association chief executive officer, Sifiso Ndlovu said the proposed council would ensure that teachers were registered and maintained high quality professional standards.
The council is expected to be up and running by the end of this year.

In an unrelated matter, a 19-year-old herd man from Mberengwa has been jailed 10 years for raping his employer’s 11-year-old daughter on several occasions.
The man was last week convicted and sentenced on his own plea of guilty to the rape charge when he appeared before Gweru regional magistrate, Morgan Nemadire.
The court heard that sometime between May last year and March this year, the man lured the girl to a secluded place and rape her after buying her silence with $1 on each occasion.
The matter only came to light early last month when he was caught in the act by the girl’s sister, leading to his arrest.
