Public Service, Labour and Social Welfare minister Prisca Mupfumira has urged the International Labour Organisation (ILO) to scale up efforts to champion decent work in the rural economy to achieve sustainable livelihoods for the majority of people and an end to hunger.

Mupfumira said this in Geneva, Switzerland, where she is leading a Zimbabwean delegation to the 329th Session of the ILO Governing Body.
The session is being attended by several countries that are part of the ILO.
In a statement yesterday, Mupfumira highlighted that Africa still had a high incidence of poverty despite the high economic growth rates witnessed on the continent.
“In her intervention, the minister accordingly called on the ILO to scale up efforts to champion decent work in the rural economy so as to achieve sustainable livelihoods for the majority of people and an end to hunger as called for in Sustainable Development Goals,” the statement said.
“She also underscored the need for the ILO to extend practical and tangible support to small and medium enterprises, as well as to the co-operatives sector so as to make the greatest impact given the fact that most economies in Africa, including Zimbabwe, are characterised by the informal sector.”
Mupfumira also impressed on the need for the tripartism of the ILO to be extended to embrace the discourse on Sustainable Development Goals including at national level.

“She also took the opportunity at the lunch hosted by the Director-General of the ILO for the President of The United Nations Economic and Social Council to highlight the initiatives that Zimbabwe is making towards formalisation of the informal sector such as provision of financial support and the construction of proper working sites for the informal sector,” the statement read.
