HIGHLANDERS players staged a four-hour sit-in at Barbourfields Stadium on Sunday after the 90th anniversary celebrations match against Dynamos demanding appearance fees they had been promised by the club.

A Highlanders player, who spoke on condition of anonymity yesterday, said after the game, Dynamos players were given $150 each in appearance fees, but they (Highlanders players) only received $30 each, leading to the sit-in until they were addressed by club treasurer Donald Ndebele and manager Vezigama Dlodlo.

“They [the executive committee] had promised us $150 each after the game, which they gave to the Dynamos players. They only gave us $30 each. We sat around at the stadium until about 9pm after which we were addressed by the manager and treasurer. They said they would update us on the way forward after today’s (yesterday’s) meeting,” the player said.

Efforts to get a comment from Ndebele were fruitless, as he was locked in meetings the whole day yesterday.

Highlanders lost the match 3-2 in a penalty shootout after a 2-2 deadlock in regulation time with Dynamos converting their spot-kicks through Godknows Murwira, Valentine Ndaba and goalkeeper Tatenda Mukuruva, while the Bulawayo giants scored theirs through Adrian Silla and Douglas Sibanda.

The match marked the conclusion of Bosso’s 90th anniversary celebrations.
