The Green Machine were crowned champions of Zimbabwean football for the first time in 11 years after beating closest challengers, FC Platinum to the finishing line in a very close race decided on the final day of the league programme.

For winning the coveted trophy, the Harare giants are supposed to get $100 000 in prize money from Delta Beverages, who sponsor the league through their Castle Lager brand.

However, part of the money will be withheld by the PSL for payment of fines for various offences committed by Caps United this season. This will leave them with

$88 000. Caps United were rewarded handsomely by club president Farai Jere, who said the team would share 50% of the total prize money.

But with the prize money set to be garnished with quite a substantial amount set to pay fines for various offences committed, it was not immediately clear yesterday whether the team would still share half of the total prize money ($100 000) or 50% of the gross amount they will get from the PSL after deductions.

The money, though, is yet to be released to the newly-crowned champions and is only expected to reflect in their bank account next week.

Club chief executive, Cuthbert Chitima acknowledged there were some fines they would have to pay to the PSL, but professed ignorance on the actual figure, saying they were still waiting for a statement from the top-flight management.

“We are aware there are some fines, but we are still waiting for a statement. We haven’t received the money yet. This is usually the norm, but we should expect it from next week,” he said.
