PRESIDENT Robert Mugabe has kept at least four envoys from European capitals unaccredited months after they arrived in the country, citing a busy schedule.

Diplomatic sources told NewsDay this week that one of the diplomats awaiting accreditation had to seek refuge in his house during an official function at his country’s embassy in Harare.

“The German ambassador-designate had to hide in his house during his country’s national day commemorations as the reception went on in the garden,” an impeccable source said.

“Other ambassadors waiting for accreditation are from Sweden, France and Portugal.”

Foreign Affairs permanent secretary Joey Bimha confirmed the situation.

“This is a very bad period and the President has been tied up with universities’ graduations as well as international engagements. He has been travelling a lot and that has made it difficult for us to find a way around the issue,” he said.

“But we are trying to find time. We had provisionally set December 1, but given the fact that the President is travelling to Cuba, which was not originally planned, that date would have to be moved as well.”

Mugabe’s international trips have been so frequent that during the first quarter of 2016, he had already gobbled over $50 million in foreign travel in a country that can hardly afford rudimentary medical supplies.

NewsDay heard that Mugabe had rescheduled the accreditation ceremonies at least five times since August.

“So far, Mugabe has scheduled the accreditation ceremony over five times and cancelled. The deputies are holding fort, as acting ambassadors, but you can imagine that some of them are now getting restless. With Christmas coming up, the whole thing has messed up contingency planning,” a source said.

“The Portuguese guy has been here since 2014 as chargé d’affaires (a diplomat who heads an embassy in the absence of the ambassador) and has since been promoted so he cannot be seen in public before he is accredited.”

  1. Sekuru ngavazorore kani nhai. Basa iri haridi vakweguru. But why can’t he delegate some of these responsibilities? Zim 1 does not mean he is the only one in Zimbabwe, please tell him. I am beginning to lose the last iota of respect that I had for this man.

  2. Can go to Papa New Guinea for a dumb 3 day summit but can’t spare 5 hours to do something in Harare, and then beg for aid from these same countries

  3. If its too much hassle for the president to wake up in the morning & go to the office why cant he just accredit these guys in his bedroom, I’m sure they can squeeze in a desk & chairs in some corner somewhere in that massive spacious room

  4. This is so shameful, why can’t this role be delegated to someone else rather than embarrass the country like this. We are told he left to attend Castro’s funeral, a funeral which has been scheduled to take place on 03 December 2016. As we speak, Chechule has been in Dakar, Senegal for the past 2 days. Ko unomhanyirei mutana uyu kuenda kurufu rwaCastro nekukasira kudaro kunge ndiye organiser wefuneral yacho.

  6. This old dictator is no longer in control of his faculties hence the need for him to step down as a matter of urgency. How can he give first preference to globe trotting instead of attending to a lot of pressing issues at home? The economy is in turmoil, but because the zanu pf president has lost his senses due to old age he keeps on milking the little money left in the treasury to go around the world like a little boy who has the excitement of boarding a plane for the first time. The fact that he is failing to comprehend that he is too old to continue in office is a clear testimony that his brains has taken leave from his thick skull, yet some full grown men and women trip on each other to endorse him to be their contesting president in 2018?It defies logic,in fact it goes on to show zanu pf is a mafia organisation that can only have their godfather replaced through death and in the meantime they will be taking advantage of his lunacy to plunder and steal anything worth looting while the old dictator is airborne busy snoring, heading to some useless meetings. With all the security forces under his direct control and Zimbabwe Election Commission’s bias towards zanu pf there seem to no light at the end of the long Zimbabawean suffering tunnel.

  7. Infact, I wanted to laugh when I read this but stopped myself short because I realised this is no laughing matter. Honestly, this Dictator must have his oven nicely made in Lucifer’s kingdom using nuclear materials for sustaining the fire. He deserves no less. Making all and sundry beggars in our own country. I pray that God strike this man with a debilitating sickness for 5 years that will render him useless to the extent of using adult pampers so Grace can show him her undying love. He needs to die a slow agonising death for the suffering he has made Zimbos to endure. As for the other murderers like Chombo, etc, these ones need banga kumha** sekuuraiwa kwakaitwa Gaddafi.

  8. African peoples time as the saying goes but then we will call it “Zimbabwe is Mine Time “!how disrespectful if it was the other round these thugs would be complaining about bad treatment
