SENSATIONAL gospel musician, Togarepi Chivaviro, on Sunday night continued on the victory trajectory that has defined his music career since the beginning of the year, scooping the Best of Africa award at the SABC Crown Gospel Awards held at the Durban International Conference Centre in South Africa.

The award came with a floating trophy, certificate and R5 000 prize money and follows on the recent nomination of his latest hit, Mhepo Inoperekedza, at the Permican Awards.

The gospel musician, who appeared to have struck the right notes with Ebenezer-Tirimunyasha, following a largely barren music career despite having released over 10 albums, has been treading on a golden path since.

Chivaviro shrugged off stiff competition from Nduduzo Matse of Swaziland and Nigeria’s Vitus Onyeneto to scoop the award.

“This is one of the best things to happen to us this year. Ebenezer-Tirimunyasha continues to shine on the international stage,” remarked an ecstatic Chivaviro yesterday.

Perhaps what made the victory sweeter, is that the same award eluded him in 2010 following the nomination of Ariko Kumusoro.

“This crown shall always be a symbol of our music journey so far and the grace that has located us through music,” Chivaviro said.

He said he was grateful for the opportunity to exchange notes with some of the winners, including Dr Tumi, who bagged six awards, Benjamin Dube, Sipho Makhabane, Jabu Hlongwane and Sfiso Ncwane, that the awards ceremony provided.

In May this year, the musician scooped the Best Collaboration Award for Ebenezer-Tirimunyasha at the inaugural Trumpet Africa Gospel Music Awards held at Pretoria State Theatre in South Africa.

He outclassed Celebration Church senior pastor and musician, Bonnie Deuschle, Wumi and Victizzle of Nigeria as well as Kenya’s Benachi and Kabere.

The song was also nominated for other awards on the continent.

Chivaviro said he hoped to inspire more local artistes to make an impact on the continent.
