CHIEF Justice Godfrey Chidyausiku yesterday rapped corrupt government officials, who are in the habit of enriching themselves from public funds at the expense of poor communities.

Chidyausiku made the remarks at the official opening of the Royal Danish Embassy-funded Goromonzi Magistrates’ Court. “The idea of pocketing the bulk or any of the proceeds of development money must be a thing of the past . . . If your areas are to develop, you must also develop with them, but if you are the only one developing, you are unlikely to enjoy your ill-gotten wealth openly amid surrounding poverty,” he said.

The Chief Justice said there should be integrity in the utilisation of resources, whether they were from Treasury or co-operating partners, to make meaningful progress in any sector.

“We thank you, Chief Chikwaka, for allowing us to build this court without paying for the land, but Paddy Zhanda (Goromonzi North MP) will compensate you, but refuse to be paid in bond notes,” he said, drawing laughter from the audience.

Chidyausiku used the occasion to launch the Judicial Service Commission (JSC) 2016 to 2020 strategic plan and said the commission had achieved 80% of their last strategic plan that ran from 2010 to 2015.

The Royal Danish Embassy charge d’affaires, Signe Winding Albjerg, said they were pleased with their achievements from their four years relationship with the JSC.

“Our partnership has exceeded the ambitious goals we committed to in 2012 with the JSC and a successful partnership requires both a will and a way,” Albjerg said.

The Danish embassy is relocating to South Africa at the end of this year after it completed the construction of 22 modern and victim friendly courts across the country through its development agency, Danida.
