The former Dynamos and Warriors forward was appointed the team’s coach in May in an interim role, after the sacking of Taurai Mangwiro following a poor start to the season.

Bambo signed a short-term contract with an option to extend the deal if the team managed a top-three finish, or better.

But with three matches to go, the City Fathers are on seventh position with 38 points and will not meet the target, as they are sitting 14 points behind third-placed FC Platinum.

However, it has emerged that Chunga will still get the job permanently following a meeting of the club’s executive in Hwange at the weekend, where three of the five members, who attended, voted in favour of the coach’s contract extension.

Secretary-general, Mathew Marara, who is the sixth member of the executive, did not attend.

Club chairman, Alois Masepe yesterday confirmed that Chunga had been “rewarded for his sterling job in blooding the juniors into the first team”.

Masepe refuted claims that there were targets set for Chunga.

“We have offered him a two-year contract. The talking has been done and what is left is the paperwork. We are happy and very comfortable with the decision,” he said.

“We are happy with what he has done since he took over. His job was to lay the groundwork for the development and manage the smooth transition of our juniors from our academy, blooding them into the first team to ensure that we do not spend too much money by bringing players from outside. He has done that excellently.”

However, a source said: “A lot of people are unhappy because the decision was made without thorough consultations. The majority of the councillors, supporters and officials were taken by surprise by the decision because they don’t think he is the right man to grow the brand.”

In response, Masepe said: “I have not met one who is not in agreement. All the people that matter are quite happy with what Chunga has done.”
