THE Midlands war veterans’ offices remain closed nearly two months after two rival factions of the Zimbabwe National Liberation War Veterans’ Association (ZNLWVA) fought over control of the association.

The offices were locked by supporters of ZNLWVA chairperson, Christopher Mutsvangwa, soon after a faction led by Manicaland Provincial Affairs minister Mandi Chimene set up an interim executive committee to run the affairs of the former fighters.

President Robert Mugabe ordered a clear-out of Mutsvangwa and his allies after the former War Veterans minister was axed from government and the ruling Zanu PF party for allegedly plotting to topple the veteran leader.

Last month, the Chimene-linked interim provincial vice-chairperson, Noah Kasikai said they had obtained a letter from their lawyers granting them permission to access the offices.

“We have a letter from our lawyers to have access to the locked offices,” he said.

It was established on Tuesday that the interim executive is, however, yet to gain access to the offices, which remain locked.

The rival provincial executive led by Virginia Mupasu, which backs Mutsvangwa, is the one blocking access to the offices.

Several attempts to get a comment from Mupasu were fruitless, as her mobile phone was unreachable.

When the Chimene faction announced the dissolution of the Midlands executive in August, Mapasu said they did not recognise the meeting that booted them out.

Mutsvangwa and his entire executive that includes Victor Matemadanda (secretary-general) and Douglas Mahiya (secretary for information and publicity) were expelled from Zanu PF in August.

Soon after his dismissal, Matemadanda said attempts to impose a new national leadership on the war veterans’ association were unconstitutional.
