VMCZ executive director Loughty Dube has been elected secretary-general of the World Association of Press Councils

VOLUNTARY Media Council of Zimbabwe (VMCZ) executive director Loughty Dube has been elected secretary-general of the World Association of Press Councils (WAPC) at its ongoing annual general meeting in Cyprus.

Dube, who has served as chairperson of the Media Institute of Southern Africa (Misa) Zimbabwe and is currently Transparency International Zimbabwe chairperson, replaces Chris Conybeare of the United States, who did not seek re-election.

An experienced journalist, Dube, who had a stint as NewsDay deputy news editor before joining the VMCZ, is the first Zimbabwean to hold a post in the WAPC executive committee.

WAPC is an umbrella organisation of Press councils and similar media bodies in different parts of the world committed to championing free speech and freedom of a responsible Press. — Blessed Mhlanga
