LOCAL human rights activist and Mandela Washington fellow, Vivid Gwede, has been nominated as Zimbabwe’s regional representative in the newly-established Mandela Fellowship Southern Africa Regional Advisory Board to spearhead the organisation’s activities.

Gwede was among 60 young Zimbabwean leaders who took part at the six-week-long 2016 Mandela Washington Fellowship programme, which ended last month.

The advisory board’s role is to advise on programming for the young African leaders after their return from the United States.

Gwede said he will push for more business opportunities, minority rights and networking for young leaders to grow their experience.

“We have great young entrepreneurs in technology, agriculture, energy, arts and other sectors upon which Zimbabwe’s, Southern Africa’s and Africa’s turnaround could be anchored,” he said.

“These are truly pan-African youths, who are working to transform their societies. I think that Africa is at the cusp of growth if it decides to take responsibility and objectively face its own weaknesses, and strengths.

“The Mandela Washington Fellows, who are taking responsibility in their communities, transforming a problem and a community at a time need to be supported.

“This should happen through more networking opportunities, servant leadership, creativity and closer collaboration within countries, regions and on the continent by the young Africa leaders. This is the vision and spirit that I will bring to the Southern African Regional Advisory Board.”

The voting opens today until the end of the month.
