The sports gala was officially opened by Commissioner-General Augustine Chihuri.
Chihuri said the sporting event was now a permanent feature on the ZRP sporting calendar, applauding the increased uptake of competitive sport by women.
“By engaging in sport, a shared space and experience is created and that enables participants and the communities to focus on what they have in common,” he said.
Chihuri said there was evidence highlighting the impact of sport in building stronger relations and a good society for the police.
The teams will compete in football, darts, chess, tennis, athletics, volleyball and netball, among others.
This event will see 1 481 women participating out of 3 991 athletes from the 17 police provinces.

“We are notably inspired by the growing participation of women in competitive sport. The level of participation is important, especially since the bulk of police work is demanding, stressful and more often, less appreciated,” he said.
The usual powerhouses at the gala Support Unit, Morris Deport, Harare and Police General Headquarters are expected to be the main contenders for the overall prize. The games started on Sunday and they will run for a week.
