TIZ in 2011 presented a damaging report on alleged abuse of office by Tomana after he had ordered his juniors to stop the prosecution of four people implicated in corruption and fraud cases.

TIZ group chairperson Loughty Dube, yesterday confirmed that his organisation would today resubmit its report to the tribunal set up by President Robert Mugabe to investigate Tomana’s case.

The Justice Moses Chinhengo-led committee was mandated to determine Tomana’s suitability to remain in office.

“On August 30, 2016, a tribunal set up at the instigation of the JSC (Judiciary Service Commission) will sit to hear evidence that will decide on the suitability of Tomana to remain as Prosecutor-General,” Dube said.

“We have been requested to come and give evidence and we will go and testify because we believe we are being vindicated for the report we presented six years ago.”

The cases TIZ documented involved ex-Mhondoro-Ngezi MP Bright Matonga, former acting medical superintendent for Bindura Provincial Hospital Beauty Basile, former Zupco board chairman Charles Nherera and an alleged illegal gold dealer, Patrick Mavros.

At the time, TIZ wanted the JSC, the Law Society of Zimbabwe, the Anti-Corruption Commission, the Parliamentary Portfolio Committee on Justice and the police to probe Tomana’s alleged corruption and abuse of office.

“So it is victory for TIZ today that finally and for the first time, the authorities are living up to their statutory and constitutional mandates by pursuing the investigations of a prominent public official such as the former Attorney-General (AG) on his alleged abuse of office, as well as his alleged abuse of office as Prosecutor-General,” Dube said.

The Chinhengo tribunal has been tasked to investigate Tomana on charges of defying court orders and criminal abuse of office when he was still AG and in his new role as PG.
