The equipment, which will be handed over to development coaches around the country, will go a long way in capacitating ZRU’s efforts to enable real-time updates of all developmental coaching activities nationally.

Speaking at the handover ceremony held in the capital yesterday, Econet Wireless customer experience manager Michael Munawa said: “As Econet, we are also excited to be part of this initiative because as the banner says the future is bright and with any forward-thinking organisation grassroots development is so important.

“It’s crucial that we start developing the sport at the earliest possible ages, as far and wide as possible and also equipping our coaches with access to the latest techniques and knowledge to what’s happening in the game.” Munawa said their partnership with ZRU had come after they recently partnered Zimbabwe-born Springboks prop Tendai “Beast” Mtawarira as their brand ambassador.

“The reason why we chose rugby is that one of our brand ambassadors for our premium brand is the beast, Tendai ‘Beast‘ Mtawarira himself, so we just wanted to stay in touch with that theme and also to take advantage that we got a well-known Zimbabwean sportsman who is doing it at international level.” Munawa said.

ZRU chief executive Colleen de Jong thanked Econet Wireless for their support for the programme which covers development of teams in previously disadvantaged communities.

Thirty-six schools are participating in the programme, focused on providing skilled coaching, access to training equipment and regular playing opportunities over an eight-month period.
