Officials from Australia’s leading pharmaceutical companies, Acpharm, recently toured Chitungwiza hospital, as part of a fact-finding mission before finalising the deal.

The companies’ representatives, Matt Cholmers and Yasmira Alimed, said they were planning to set up a drug manufacturing plant at Chitungwiza Hospital, which would benefit the country’s health sector.

“Our wish is to partner with Chitungwiza Central Hospital in establishing a drug manufacturing plant. Our drugs will be available at an affordable cost to patients,” he said.

Cholmers said they chose to partner Chitungwiza Hospital because of its sound management system.

Chitungwiza hospital chief executive officer, Obadiah Moyo said the proposed investment dovetailed with the health institution’s expansion programmes and its quest to continue offering quality but affordable services.

Zimbabwe’s health sector has been in a state of paralysis over the past decade due to severe underfunding from Treasury, forcing the donor community to chip in and fill the gap.
