In an interview with NewsDay Sport after the race, Zhuwawo, who qualified for Rio Olympics at the Beijing marathon after coming third with a time of 2:14min 25 sec, said the Sunday race had given him a good preparation for the Olympics.

The veteran runner will be making his second appearance at the Olympics after making his bow at the 2012 London games, where he came 15th.

“I participated in this race to prepare for the Rio Olympics. l am just fine tuning my performance and next month, I will be doing more, but I also need to guard against fatigue,” he said.

“Last time, at the London Olympics, I came 15th, so this time I am expecting to be in the top 10, I now have the experience needed to run at such races.”

National Athletics Association of Zimbabwe president, Tendai Tagara said he was happy Zhuwawo participated in the Tanganda half marathon, saying his presence in the field would have motivated upcoming marathon runners.

“I am happy for Zhuwawo, he came to participate in this race, motivating other youngsters,” he said.
