He succumbed to a stroke and passed away at Beitbridge District Hospital, where he was admitted on Wednesday morning.

“It’s sadly true, he has left us,” his son, Brian, told our correspondent in Beitbridge yesterday.

His neighbours said Bonyongo, the last man to fight the late Zimbabwean and African heavyweight champion, Proud Chinembiri, known as Kilimanjari, is believed to have suffered the stroke at his home on Tuesday night.

“He slept alone in the house and in the morning, we saw his wife and children breaking open the door which was locked from inside,” a neighbour said. “We took him to hospital, but his breathing was faint.”

Bonyongo was born in Rusape in 1955 in a family of three children, he being the only boy.

Burial arrangements are yet to be advised.
