Government still owes service providers for the African Union Sports Council (AUSC) Region 5 Youth Games that were held in Bulawayo in December 2014.

Those owed have been engaging government, but despite promises, they still haven’t received their dues.

“Government is a big organisation and it is owed by and owes a lot of businesses across the country and Bulawayo is no exception,” Hlongwane said yesterday.

“The debt that is owed by government to service providers for the AUSC Region 5 Games is acknowledged.”

He said government coffers were constrained, but there were plans to settle the debts.

“There is constrained fiscal space that limits government’s ability to manoeuvre in terms of making payment immediately. That is not limited to the creditors for the Region 5 Games. Once government has acknowledged debt, government pays. It’s a question of time. We want our creditors to exercise patience.”

Hlongwane was at the Ministry of Sport stand at the Zimbabwe International Trade Fair (ZITF) and said their aim of exhibiting this year as a new ministry was to showcase their brand.

“ZITF is the premium platform for exhibition in our country. All brands that need exposure to the consuming public and all brands that need to interact with their stakeholders want to take part in any edition of the ZITF. The ministry is not an exception. We are trying to build a brand.”
