ZRP applauds citizen police

POLICE Deputy Commissioner-General (operations) Innocent Matibiri yesterday lauded members of the public for helping in exposing and weeding out criminal police officers.

Matibiri made the remarks at a police public relations department annual workshop in Harare.

This comes amid increased cases of police officers caught by members of the public demanding bribes and mounting unauthorised roadblocks where they allegedly fleece motorists of their hard-earned money.

“As a proactive organisation which always puts more emphasis on crime prevention rather than investigation, community and corporate world involvement and participation in crime management is of paramount importance,” Matibiri said.

“To this end, let me extend my profound gratitude to members of the public for unconditionally supporting police operations. It is indeed heartening to observe that the people of Zimbabwe are now assisting police in arresting not only criminals, but also errant police officers.

“This demonstrates the unwavering commitment of our people to rid society of criminal elements,” he added.

Last week, two police officers were exposed by members of the public after they mounted an illegal roadblock along the Harare-Norton Highway.

One of the suspects was arrested after a high-speed chase and is now awaiting trial, while his alleged accomplice is still at large.

Matibiri also commended the corporate world for providing financial and material support to the police.

The workshop is focusing on a wide range of issues, including customer care, media strategy, media relations, human rights and policing, and counselling, among others.

Silveira House is partnering police on the initiative.

  8. What constitutes an illegal road block, We once heard that 2 officers cant make a road block but we see plenty of these pairs doing their stuff on the road. Even on the so called legal road, there is so much anguish caused on motorists which borders on extortion.I have had first hand experience when I did not have my licence on me, my car was impounded by Southerton crew
