The sixth anniversary of Sam’s death will be commemorated tomorrow with a music concert dubbed Celebrating Sam Mtukudzi at Pakare Paye Arts Centre.

In a recent exclusive interview with NewsDay at the centre in Norton, the Tozeza Baba hitmaker said they were still learning to live without Sam.

“Since I lost my son, I am, even today, still learning to live with it. It is not like a hump that you will forget about. I am learning to accept it and my wife has stood by me,” he said.

“But above all, it is through the grace of God that we have managed to console each other.”

The music superstar described Sam’s death as a permanent scar, but life had to continue despite the wound.

“I could not stop being who I am after the death of Sam because I would be killing myself . . . We had to learn that the scar is permanent, but life must not come to an end because of the wound,” he said.

Sam died together with his friend Owen Chimhare in a car crash in the early hours of Monday, March 15, 2010, while travelling back to his Norton home near Harare.

Their Tata pick-up truck, driven by Chimhare, was said to have hit the rail of a bridge just before the Kuwadzana Extension off-ramp along the Harare-Norton road. The vehicle veered off the road, rammed into the bridge’s guard rails before ploughing into the river bank.

Tomorrow’s commemorations will see musicians including Sulumani Chimbetu, Jah Prayzah, Alick Macheso, Gary Tight, Sam Dondo, Pakare Paye Ensemble and Prince Edward Jazz Band performing at the tribute concert.

According to Taka Mashonganyika, who is part of the organising team, copies of Sam’s 14-track posthumous third album titled Misiirwa, mastered at Pakare Paye Studios, will also go on sale on the night.

Sam died while the album was in the final production stage. By the time Sam — a talented saxophonist and acoustic guitar wizard — died he had released two albums, Rume Rimwe and Cheziya, to critical acclaim.
