Official Secrets Act haunts Mujuru

Zimbabwe People First (ZimPF) leader and former Vice-President Joice Mujuru will not divulge some details of President Robert Mugabe’s misrule and right abuses because of fear of contravening the Official Secrets Act.

BY RICHARD CHIDZA/BLESSED MHLANGA

Joice-Mujuru

In an interview with South African radio station SAFM on Tuesday, Mujuru was asked if she was ready to come clean and spill the beans on alleged election rigging and other alleged atrocities committed by Mugabe and his administration in the 34 years she was in government.

“I did not take part (in rigging). It is not something that is for public consumption. It could not have been a public thing,” she said.

“It was not something that every Jack and Jill would know if it ever happened. I did not know or come across it. But the other thing that you should understand is that when you are appointed under oath, [you cannot reveal] all the things.”

Mujuru once again apologised for her role in the repressive policies that trampled on the rights of the people under Mugabe’s leadership.

“Yes, I am sorry. One should just work to show that she did not approve the policies that were meant to persecute people,” she said.

The ZimPF leader revealed she has found it rather unfair that people were painting her with the same brush as Mugabe when it came to accusations of running down the country and the political mess Zimbabwe found itself in.

Mujuru was also evasive on what action she would take on her former colleagues accused of human rights abuses.

“These are the issues we are discussing in the meetings we have had even with brutalised people and those that were maimed. We have met them and they know our position on these issues,” she said.

Mujuru said problems between her and Mugabe started as early as 2006, just two years after her elevation to the Vice-Presidency.

“He (Mugabe) spoke badly about me at the Gweru conference in 2006. It was because I had spoken against political violence and the violation of people’s rights,” she claimed.

“We did not fight for one centre of power; we fought so that everyone is important in the development of the country. Once you begin to hear someone speak in language such as ‘my people, my country, me, me, me’, then you realise all that we fought for has been flushed down the drain.

It was done in a subtle manner and silently but between 2013 and 2014, it reared its ugly head.”
The former Vice-President said she had long realised that Zanu PF had lost direction, but tried unsuccessfully to reform the party from within.

“I intended to change things from within and we failed,” she said.

“We failed because at the time it seemed as if not many people agreed with my way of thinking within the party. However, the fact that he (Mugabe) went about firing and continues to fire people to this day means we were in the majority.

“We kept hoping that the party would stick to its values and Constitution, using majority decisions and election process as a way of changing leadership. But the one centre of power mantra showed us our efforts were futile.”

Mujuru apologised for poor decisions made during her time, adding she was like the biblical Saul who later became Paul after repenting from darkness and seeing the light.

This woman should shut up, she and her husband hounded Nyambirai a fellow black man out of farms he bought, tell us about Econet who you didn’t want to get a Licence if they didn’t give your family shares, the whiteman whose tobacco you and General confiscated at the farm in beatrice together with their cattle. You want to use Zimbabweans to fight your battles for you and yet you were at the forefront oppressing people singing mbiri yechigandanga ndoo mbiri ye zanu.

Precisely. And how she speaks with a forked tongue saying she was unaware of electoral rigging (when in fact she was number 2 on the hierarchy) and under the same breathe she condescendingly says “these things are not for public consumption.” The same woman is also surrounded by criminal mafia elements like Mutasa who tortured, brutalized and traumatized opponents. How can any sane person expect justice, fairness and reparation from such a wicked cartel?

Unless Mujuru confesses how they rigged the elections & stole our freedom so many times in zanupf, we will never allow her to take us for fools & support her

Mai Mujuru is the right person who can take Mugabe head on. I dont know why people are against a woman who have shown that, even its known, she did not take part in all the evil deeds of Zanupf. Even Mai Mugabe once confesed that she never came across mai mujuru saying pasi neMDC. The problem with some individuals is they are taking Mai Mujuru as a threat to Tsvangirai popularity. I think its bad for the opposition to fight each other. By so doing we are giving Mugabe another victory come 2018. United we stand divided we fall.

    • kn March 11, 2016 at 7:14 am #

Amen to that @Levison thats the way out

    • Magumo March 11, 2016 at 9:12 am #

i dont agree on that. you cant blame Zimbabwean people for not trusting someone who has been in a system which has evaded the hope for a better life for the past 35 years. How long did it took her to realise that the Zanu Pf has lost direction?she should have left the party and voice out not top wait to be fired. Simba makoni is a good example.
i would rather trust Tsvangirai because he has been the opposition voice for a very long time, they tried to bribe him but he refused and stood for what he believes in.

    • midas March 11, 2016 at 9:50 am #

Its not that she is perceived as a threat to Tsvangirayi but she seems to know a lot of things but not interested in revealing them so the question is did she benefit from those things or not? She is saying sorry and sorry for what if she is being secretive.

the reason why Zimbabwe is this situation is because an average Zimbabwean doesn’t want the truth. below are some of the truths that people routinely circumvent:

joice mujuru was the main driver of corruption in zanu with her late hubby rex.
she owns a number of farms, mine and buildings around the country.
she has no positive contribution to make to the country given her horrendous performance in govt for the past 35 years.
she is a liar who wants us to believe that she always had differences with Mugabe yet she begged him to stay on the eve of her official cashiering.
the fact that on top of her priorities is the chasing of solo’s killers shows that she is in it for her own benefit and not for national benefit. tsvangirayi lost his wife in dodgy circumstances but never has he said that he wants to avenge that.
also, joice consistently said that she has no ambition to become president now she is lying that people requested her to be president.
the day we learnt to accept and tell the truth, our country and ourselves shall be liberated!!!

  6. Chipams March 11, 2016 at 8:18 am #

Then if you don’t accept her, we remain stuck in the mud. Revolutionary parties can only be removed by a revolutionary.

  7. lambos March 11, 2016 at 8:28 am #

Mugabe has misled people for a long time. Now it is worse because of his ignoramus wife who is trying to control the country and fire anyone in disagreement with her! Mujuru may be opportunistic but she is telling the truth that Zanu PF has lost direction and we need a vibrant opposition to that. She may not be the ideal leader but she must carry on and oppose one family rule.

  8. garikayi March 11, 2016 at 8:41 am #

Mai Mujuru and her late husband think that kukwirana vari musango made them special!!! They too are thieves, looters, land grabbers, destroyers…you chased away innocent farmers and took all their property in Beatrice. We will never forget that. This woman is a hypocryte, Mugabe ari nani. She keeps saying sorry sorry.. sorry for what? Tell us what you know about looting of Zimababwe’s resources, tell us about all the dead people killed whilst you were in government, tell us where the diamonds are that you and your daughter smuggled out of the country, tell us what business you conducted to make filthy rich, tell us how you rigged elections, tell us how you killed members of the oposiion in 2002, 2008 and 2013…scum-berg you mai Mujuru…repent and repent. You keep telling us that you are Salvation Army member, ok yes but that does not make you clean. Can someone give this idiot zyklon B tablests please, this will take her to sleep…for ever and join her looting husband in hell and wait for ugly Bob there.

Agreed Levison. How many times should we do corrections to get things right. For goodness sake this woman is not the problem. If we dwell in the past all that will work to ZANU PF’s advantage. the enemy is just one in this country. ZANU PF, period!

  10. Gwenzi March 11, 2016 at 8:42 am #

I smell a rat here, why does she not reveal how the elections were rigged, the people of Zimbabwe need to know. She is not in Govt anymore and that will be prove that she has changed. JM come clean NOW!

This is game over for her, she has nothing to offer because she will cover the tracks of abductors and murderers in ZanuPF. How is she going to hunt down and reveal the identities of those who killed her husband? We are convinced as a nation that if it is true that Solomon Mujuru was murdered,he was killed by people in ZanuPF. Will she be prepared to hunt down all perpetrators of violence, abductions and killings of those in opposition? The answer is obvious a big NO!!! The reason has nothing to do with the Official Secret Act but has to do with shielding some of her ZPF top officials who were killing for Mugabe.

Once a Pirate always a Pirate, Mai Mujuru is Zanu PF to the core. She might be able to give a formidable opposition to Zanu PF, yes but removing Mugabe and put Mujuru in power is as good as keeping the same set up. Totofa tichipusha kuti Chematama chipinde panyanga

Soko history repeats itself this woman political ambition is to secure her riches she has no ambition to save Zimbabweans. if she was like Saul she would be the one to expose Zanu showing us that she has changed!!!

A “pure” party that had nothing to do with ZANU PF and its history failed to dislodge Mugabe from power, even after coming close in 2008. Does Zimbabwe want to continue trying this route of failure? Definitely NO! Now we have an embittered splinter group with ZANU PF DNA but breathing the fire of vengeance, why don’t we give it a chance” If we don’t want Mujuru and company to do it for us then we are saying ZANU PF is better than anything that splinters from it. In any case who was never ZANU PF? We were all there in 1980 singing “mauya, mauya comrade, zvamauya hamuchadzoki”. We also prayed for a long life to our leaders and God is answering faithfully. Now you want Mugabe to die. Shame. Our national anthem also has refrains asking for longevity to our national leadership. Do we not sing “navatungamiri vave nenduramo”? Don’t be naïve!

mai mujuru is the only promising candidate to take us away of the misrule of Zanu PF. She has been there for those years yes but who else can manage to remove the old man? MDC has failed that is a fact. we can talk of Nikuv, rigging and staff but for over a decade they have failed. mai mujuru is coming from that system she knows how to undo it

  18. Grievance Mafunga March 11, 2016 at 10:04 am #

It is surprising that Mujuru, like Simba Makoni haven’t taken a hard stance against MUGABE and the media frantically speaks for her. She is always evasive and avoids questions and perceptions that depict Mugabe as a ruthless dictator whose policies have run down the Zimbabwean nation. She is still gripped with the FEAR of Mugabe that has always griped his praise team in the politibereau and cabinet. NEWSDAY STOP SPEAKING FOR MUJURU .

she is slowly not become my choice, why? she is not prepared to go to jail or die for the freedom of the people. i will stick with morgan, why becoz he is still prepared to go to jai and even be killed or even a swollen face for the people. this secrecy act thing is protecting people with skeletons in the their caboards. could it be true that if mujuru revealed everything, her own skeletons which i believe she has will be known also. most of these pf guys are not repenting of the many sins they did. sometimes for the sake of people we may decide to lose everything and i think my mum is not prepared for that at present. one day Jesus told a rich man sell everything and give to the poor and follow Him and the young man could not take that. she fought for freedom. thank you. but the next freedom we want now she is not the right person.

I’m not a Mujuru supporter myself but I strongly advocate for change or better fortunes in this country. However guys we need to understand something very basic about the law. The Official Secrets Act the reporter refers to is not something you can overlook as an ex-gvt official. Trust me it will come back to hound you. Remember these guys are looking for the smallest excuse to arrest her. With this current gvt you need to play it very smart.

    • Hapana March 11, 2016 at 1:15 pm #

So she is not prepared to risk jail or death for the sake of our freedom? Then we better stick to Morgan. She must spill the beans. If she is a coward then she is useless. She just want power and she is not there to free the people. She is evil this woman. First repent, then CONFESS. Even the bible says so.

    • Changamuka March 19, 2016 at 9:05 am #

kkkk Shoko do you know what the law says about official secrets?? There is a difference between the government and a political party. When it is election time there would be no goverment thats your seperation of powers, so if one discloses that one party has rigged say MDC he or she wont be contraveting the Official Secrets Act and therefore not liable whatsoever.

  23. THE GREAT WAR HEROE March 11, 2016 at 11:29 am #

UMujuru yena wathatheka wakhomba uMugabwe, uthe senanzelella ukuthi uMugabe kasakwanisi kumbe kabasakwanisani kwabanzima yikho linanzelela ukuthi impi yayiphakathi kwakhe loGrace. So manje khathesi ukuthi akhulume ababekwenza phela sokusitsho ukthi ahle akhulume lokuthi wayethandana loMugabe, and lokho ngazake akwenze ngoba kungahle kuvele sobala ukuthi it was an office of sex and that made them believe they had born almost everyone in Zimbabwe, the reason why they were/they are saying “MY PEOPLE”, For her to divulge all the secrets it also means she should tell the killing of her husband. if she fails to tell that it simply means its a non starter if we wanted her to tell how the rigging were done. but with sure i know Didyie must simply tell us on behalf of Mujuru.

The opposition electrolate in the mould of mdc supporters what do you really want… If its to remove rg Mugabe then u HV t bank on teurai ropa…she is more fresh in opposition politics …she’s an opposition politics super sub ….tsvangirai aneta nekudyiwa namugabe. Mugabe said he has more than a 100 tricks kuwinner maelections and since Joice was a political porn in that very system he knows how to counter those tricks. Opposition supporters if u want Mugabe to rule until he dies keep voting for Morgan the guy has no more political clue. The way am seeing it especially in MDC is a lot people who believe so much in the person of tsvangirai rather than in the MDC political ideology WC is the thing that has killed ZANU pf …believing in Mugabeism rather than the pan African founding principles upon WC the party was build. Let us try Joice mujuru in 2018 .

Morgan never lost an election. Morgan is not confused. How many times was he arrested. He even lost his beloved wife. Dont blame Morgan please. He is the only person who gave the regime sleepless nights since the inception of MDC. Anyway for now the best option is coalition to remove this regime, but on the moral scale Morgan is far much better than Mujuru. Chematama is brave, the problem with us Zimbos is we want him to do everything while we are watching from a distance. You are being told to go and register to vote , but you dont do. You only show up at rallies, then say how come Morgan you lose. In rural areas heardman chase everyone to the voting booth. You see were you are lacking.

  29. Memory Siziba March 11, 2016 at 12:40 pm #

Morgan is far much better than Mujuru. Morgan is a man of the people and man of the struggle. He has suffered a lot , beeing arrested, beaten, with his wife killed. Yet he did not look back. Now Mujuru can not even say a bad word against the oppressive regime WHY? She is frightened. She only commends on her husband ‘s death now. MMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMM

  30. Edgar Zvinodavanhu March 11, 2016 at 12:45 pm #

Now she is caught between two hard surfaces.
I just wonder how she intends to heal the nation when she can’t say what how and why the nation needs healing in the name of protecting Mugabe.
At the end she will just say ” It was a moment of madness ” like her Mugabe leaving the nation unheald.
She should take this time to reveal all and ask for forgiveness then listen to how people need healing.
Without that she is not People First as she potrays her to be.
A Zanu Pf decoy I suppose.

If you look at the the twits that surface in Mai Mujuru’s press coverages you will realize that people are interested but not in her political party but rather in what she is going to say about what was happening in government during her tenure of office as VP and what they were doing that resulted in this quagmire we find ourselves in and also who was behind the gross human rights violations. As long as Mujuru doesn’t reveal what was happening and keeps hiding behind the phony secrets act, she will become irrelevant and people will want to forget she ever left Zanu PF and also that on its own confirms that she was fired by Mai Mugabe so she could not take over as President after her husband, not by Mugabe as is Mutsvangwa and the rest of the useless many of them. Also let us not forget that she is implicated in many corrupt activities and she is afraid if she ever reveals any of the horrors by Zanu PF, she will be thrown by them into the same hell of fire and she is not prepared to face that

  36. Hapana March 11, 2016 at 1:22 pm #

This woman is EVIL. Period. I will never vote for anything that is ZANU-PF in my life. She killed, looted, robbed too many people in her life. If life was that simple, that you murder other people and simply wake up one day when it suits you, and say I have repented and life should just move on, then you are wrong. She must CONFESS first. Who did she kill and how she did it? Why isn’t she directly criticising Mugabe? She even avoids mentioning his name???
We want the truth from you, nothing else. Even if you tell all the truth, I still wont vote for you. It will be just to relieve yourself of your evilness. Why did you start questioning Rex death only when you are expelled? You are EVIL.

So, once corrupt, always corrupt This is about saving the Zimbabwean Nation from horrible men that want to devour the spouls of humans for money and power. Not even swearing under oath can stop one from doing the right thing – no – I don’t think so. So, she should continue dreaming because she is bring nothing to the table.

  38. Think March 11, 2016 at 2:25 pm #

Hey people, think before you rush to write.Firstly, it is not true than Zanu PF was as bad in the 1980s as it is right now unless you were Zapu , UANC or Zanu Ndonga. It was then truly the people’s party.Remember GORE REGUTSARUZHINJI, GORE REKUSHANDURA ZVINHU etc.Secondly, it’s not equally true that president Mugabe was as bad then as he is right now having proclaimed the gospel of RECONCILIATION.It’s after he had tested power that he started displaying dictatorial tendencies. Remember the saying ” POWER CORRUPTS, ABSOLUTE POWER CORRUPTS ABSOLUTELY”. Then the rot started and he did not entertain anybody challenging him either within or outside Zanu PF. Hence we started witnessing cases of violence and abductions/disappearances not that everybody in that party approved of that system. There were some who thought they could transform the party from within and they were labeled all sorts of names- traitors, puppets etc. Now we are told there is one centre of power in Zanu PF.For these reasons is it bad when Mujuru attacks both the regime and the president for the mess that we find ourselves in today? Is it bad when she forms an opposition party to fight the evil system which cannot be dismantled from within? So what really do we hope to do as a nation to rid ourselves from the jaws of this diabolic system? I personally think Mujuru deserves our support rather than always blaming her for once opposing the issuance of a license to one Strive Masiiwa. That is now water under the bridge as she enters a new era of opposition politics.

  39. Think March 11, 2016 at 2:58 pm #

If you have never been in government before or if you are ignorant of the law you will never understand the gravity of breaching the official secrets act. You can never do that and get away with it because you do it under oath. Now is not the right time for her to risk that- it would be very foolish of her. However, time will come when she shall let the cat out of the bag. For now, she should concentrate on building her new outfit without having to invite unnecessary trouble- you have to have political intelligence to last in the game.Did you expect her to make it public how elections were rigged etc? That would simply spell her demise.

Zimbabwe is in a critical crisis at the moment,,we need right minded, determined and eager persons to make the move towards redemption. If Mai Mujuru is to be one such person then she would need to sacrifice and “PUT THE ZIMBABWE PEOPLE FIRST” We are tired of “Hide n seek” or wateva game being played in Zimbabwe leadership,,WE WANT THE TRUTH.If Mujuru is not willing to reveal the diabolic activities within the EVIL Zanu pf government which has oppressed us for so long, then she is ‘NOT THE RIGHT PERSON!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!” though she has a potential to be.To trust her,,she must prove herself to us.WWe are tired of electing “Good people ” who suddenly turn into wolves in parliament.Mujuru must say the truth and we will believe n elect her.”VIVA ZIMBABWEANS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!”

Surely she must say the truth KKKKKK.If she had committed murder it means going to prison. So will that do any good for her and to please who.Gentlemen and ladies lets leave politics for politicians and the rest of us go for work and revive the economy.Joice is not against Zanu-Pf but against individuals in Zanu-PF period. There are no better policies that can outshine Zanu-Pf policies unless you are a Rhodesian.

When Hitler took over power in 1933 it didn’t take him long to make every member of the army swear an oath of loyalty. But after the second World War broke out and things were beginning to go badly for the Nazis and the German army, some generals thought if they blow up Hitler they may be able to reach some good surrender terms with USA and their allies. This was Operation Valkyrie on 20 July plot in 1944. It failed and the officers, had to go into hiding etc.

My question to Mujuru is; if these officers were to come back to their Jewish victims and say they never agreed with Hitler and they wanted to reform from within that’s why they sided with him for 10 years,do you think the victims’ would heal by those words, especially if they were to say they cannot divulge Hitler’s secrets?

Mujuru,Mutasa and Gumbo are Zanu PF to the core. Full stop. It’s ZanuPF trying to perpetuate it’s rule via the back door. Was Mujuru not there when all she is moaning about was happening. For 35 years she was part of the system. She has no idea how people suffered and continue to do so. Do you think she will turn in all her political friends? She is just a guilty and corrupt as all of them.
