The convention, which runs from February 10 to 12, would be attended by players in the industry and government. It is also expected to draw representatives of the travel and tourism sector in neighbouring countries.

Zimbabwe Council for Tourism (ZCT) chief executive officer, Paul Matamisa said the convention would focus on creating an environment where tourism can grow and develop.

“The tourism convention will take place at Elephant Hills Resort from February 10 to 12 and will focus on creating an environment where travel and tourism can grow and develop, increasing its value to the overall economy and playing a more meaningful role in national development,” he said.

The convention is a way for stakeholders within the travel and tourism industry to chart a way forward in support of the drive by the Ministry of Tourism and Hospitality to create a $5 billion tourism economy by 2020.

The 2016 Tourism Convention, arranged and hosted by the ZCT, has sought to bring together people and organisations involved in travel and tourism in the private and public sectors.

Matamisa said the event would afford a chance for stakeholders to strategise together in a spirit of co-operation and partnership, focusing entirely on positive forward paths and affirmative activity.

Tourism and Hospitality minister Walter Mzembi will open the event while invitations have been sent to a cross-section of personalities in the public and private sectors.

These individuals invited will be part of the dialogue leading to on-going action towards the $5 billion tourism economy drive.

Running concurrently with the convention would be a Suppliers Expo, where providers of goods and services in the travel and tourism sector will present these to delegates and to invited guests.

“This is a unique opportunity for us all to meet and channel our ideas and strengths into a direction that results in genuine growth and development of our sector,” Matamisa said.
