Antipas snoops on Sundowns

CHICKEN Inn coach Joey Antipas is in South Africa on what is believed to be a spying mission ahead of their February 13 Caf Champions League match against Absa Premier Soccer League giants Mamelodi Sundowns at Luveve Stadium.

Antipas has not joined his side as they prepare to compete against other African champions with Chicken Inn secretary Tavengwa Hara confirming that he will be with the team next week.

“The programme that the technical team set does not really require the head coach to be there. He should join the team next week. He is in South Africa on club business,” he said.

Hara would not be drawn into revealing the “club business”, but speculation is rife that the championship-winning coach is on a snooping mission in that country.

Sundowns will be playing against University of Pretoria on Saturday and Antipas is likely to watch that match.

There have been indications that the South African side had requested that the match be played in the evening.

Hara could neither confirm nor deny that, but confirmed that their match would be played at Luveve Stadium.

He said as a club they have not set targets for the coach, but will do so after the team has finalised it preparations for their debut appearance in the Caf Champions League.

“We believe the programme that the coaches presented to us is okay. After they have prepared for the Champions League, we will then sit with the players and technical team and set out our targets,” he said.

Chicken Inn, who retained most of their players from last season, will be competing for the first time in the Champions League.

They were promoted in 2011 and have been a force in the Castle Lager Premier Soccer League winning against big names in Zimbabwean football.

They, however, lost out on the Easycall Cup when they were beaten by Highlanders in the final.
