VIOLENCE broke out in Chitungwiza yesterday, after a group of suspected Zanu PF supporters stormed a funeral wake, where they allegedly abducted one of the mourners accusing him of being linked to ousted former Vice-President Joice Mujuru’s People First project.

A police report has since been made — RRB number 2685361.

Witnesses said the suspected Zanu PF youths, clad in party regalia besieged the funeral wake and targeted one Lisbon Matema, accusing him of insulting President Robert Mugabe at the funeral.

Though Zanu PF commissar for Harare Shadreck Mashayamombe professed ignorance over the matter, witnesses said ruling party supporters accused Matema of attacking Mugabe. Matema is a known Zanu PF official in the area.

“Let me find out on that. I did not hear anything of that sort,” Mashayamombe said.

But Nyasha Nhau, one of the mourners and director of an arts and culture organisation said the suspected Zanu PF supporters accused Matema of verbally attacking Mugabe and dragged him to their vehicle.

“They said he attacked the President at the funeral. They took him. I tried to question them and they pushed me away, despite my disability. One of them said he was a [Central Intelligence Organisation] CIO officer and I demanded his identity, but could not produce it,” Nhau said.

“Most of them are known and as we speak, we are making a police report here in Chitungwiza. Those who took him are not saying anything and as it stands, he is nowhere to be found.”

He said the suspected Zanu PF activists accused some of the mourners of being Gamatox, a group of Zanu PF supporters linked to Mujuru.

Matema is said to be a staunch Zanu PF supporter, who even contested in the district elections recently.

It is alleged that he was seen talking to supporters linked to Mujuru’s yet to be launched People First party, hence the acrimony.

Police could not immediately comment on the matter.

Recently two Zanu PF officials were axed to death in Chitungwiza by their colleague who later died under mysterious circumstances while in police custody.
