On Tuesday, Zifa president, Philip Chiyangwa announced they were ordering fresh PSL elections on the basis that Phiri was no longer representing the interests of Caps United, since he no longer had a controlling stake at the club.

Chiyangwa said they had learnt that there had been changes in Caps United shareholding structure and that Phiri no longer had control at the Harare football giants.

“We have resolved to have elections at PSL. We have learnt that the PSL chairman no longer has control at Caps United, so it is on that basis that we resolved to have new elections at the PSL. We also resolved to have elections for women’s soccer and the regions — Eastern and Central — to replace Piraishe Mabhena and Felton Kamambo. We will also have elections for Masvingo province,” Chiyangwa said.

Caps United president, Farai Jere, who was said to be out of the country yesterday, has taken over the majority shareholding at the club.

By virtue of being PSL chairman, one gets automatic entry into the Zifa board.

Informed sources said Zifa could not order elections for PSL.

“They (Zifa) cannot order PSL elections. It’s the PSL clubs that can recall Phiri and unless that happens, Zifa cannot order elections for the PSL.”

“A club can choose a representative they want on the PSL board of governors. Even a secretary-general can be chosen and Phiri is one of the directors at Caps United. This means the decision to order elections for the PSL is null and void,” the administrator, who requested anonymity, said.

Caps United board chairman, Lewis Uriri could not be reached for comment yesterday.

It has emerged that Phiri, who has been at the helm of the PSL since 2010 and was re-elected last year, was seconded by the club to represent them on the PSL board of governors.

Phiri’s survival in that post mainly hinges on support from Caps United.
