Ellias Chidamwa and co-accused Nhlanhla Moyo (23) made limited pleas, which were rejected by magistrate Olivia Mashava Mashaire yesterday.

State prosecutor Nhlanhla Ndlovu told the court that on October 31, the complainant, Foster Ncube of Vumbachikwe, retired to bed and secured her doors, but left the windows open.

“When she woke up the next morning, she discovered her handbag had been pulled out through a window. When she looked outside, she saw it hanging from a pole outside. She went outside and discovered that her Nokia cellphone and $90 had been stolen,” the prosecutor said.

Ncube reported the matter to the police and during investigations, Ncube’s husband discovered that the stolen cellphone was still active and Chidamwa had posted his own profile picture on social network platform WhatsApp. Chidamwa was located by the police and implicated Moyo upon his arrest.

Chidamwa told the court that he had received the cellphone from Moyo and denied stealing the cash, while Moyo said he was in hospital on the day the offence was committed.

The trial continues with the accused persons set to call their witnesses.
