The Green Machine take on relegated WhaWha in their final match of the season and will be hoping to secure maximum points to end the season on a high note.

But crucially, Chitembwe, who has not hidden his deep affection for his boyhood club, declared during Caps United’s weekly Press conference that they will be fighting for honours next season.

He said they would not be doing justice to the brand if they were to be content with fighting for a top-four position.

The Caps United gaffer said his target, after he was appointed midway through the current campaign, was to improve the side in preparation for the next campaign.

“I am a pragmatic coach and when I was appointed, my target was always to improve the team,” Chitembwe said.

“I never talked of a top-four finish. I am happy with the boys. I think it’s the finest generation of players I have. Next season we deserve to be fighting for honours. I don’t think we will be doing justice to the brand if we are not fighting for honours. Caps United has a massive history. Fighting for the championship is what the club deserves,” he said.

He added that he would not be making major changes to the squad ahead of the next campaign, but would have a few additions.

“I am very happy with the squad I have. I won’t be making wholesome changes to the team, but will add one or two players.”

Chitembwe said he would want to end the season on a winning note and would approach WhaWha with respect despite that they are already relegated.

“Our approach will be the same. It’s a very good game. We are looking forward to try and maximise on our performance. We are looking forward to get all three points,” he said.

Caps United will be without the services of star defender Stephen Makatuka, who was red-carded in the 1-1 draw against FC Platinum at Mandava Stadium.

“We will miss him (Makatuka). He is a key player for us, but we have been doing well even without some of our key players. We did well without Leonard Tsipa when he was injured. Whoever is going to play should put maximum effort,” the Caps United gaffer said.

Makatuka said he was sad to miss the final game of the season. He described the current season as his best in Caps United colours.

“When I came in 2013, I didn’t play in 10 games. I didn’t have the experience, but this season the weekend match is the only match I will miss. I think I had a very good season,” Makatuka said.

Caps United are in fifth position on the league table with 43 points and will be looking to bag three more points to enhance their chances of a top-four finish.
