THE Programme for Infrastructure Development in Africa (Pida) will hold a one-week meeting in Abidjan, Ivory Coast, on infrastructure development on the continent starting tomorrow.

The meeting, which runs under the theme, Accelerating Infrastructure Implementation for Africa’s Integration, ends on November 17.
Fifty-one infrastructure projects are being implemented in Africa under Pida programmes at an estimated cost of $80 billion under the first phase.
The projects will be completed in 2040 at a cost of $360 billion.
The meeting will be attended by the African Union Commission, New Partnership for Africa’s Development (Nepad) Planning and Co-ordinating Agency, African Development Bank, United Nations Economic Commission for Africa, regional economic blocs Ecowas, Sadc, Comesa, Economic Community of Central African States, East African Community, Inter-governmental Authority on Development, UMA, Community of Sahel-Saharan States, European Union and Germany Agency for International Development.
Pida is an African Union Commission initiative in conjunction with Nepad, African Development Bank and the United Nations Economic Commission for Africa.
Some of the problems faced by Pida include lack of capacity for project preparation, funding for project preparation and non-involvement of the private sector.

Pida was approved in January 2012 during the 18th ordinary session of the African Union.
Pida programmes are spread across energy, transport, water and information communication technology to address the infrastructure deficit in Africa.
The Pida projects are also aimed at increasing road access, electricity access as well as create jobs for citizens.
