The eight-hour shift starts at 6am when they leave the Kelvin Road depot in Graniteside to their various routes. One has to be physically fit in order to do the running and lifting in many times the heavy plastic refuse bins .
So much is said about these men so NewsDay chief photographer Aaron Ufumeli spent a shift with one of the teams and after making an appointment with the relevant department so that he could experience what they go through every day and at the same time capture them at work in keeping the City of Harare clean.
Despite some of the council workers complaining that they have not been paid for the past three months, the crew showed enthusiasm as they carried out their duties and at times showing that they are human beings after all as they cracked jokes and greeted residents.
A single route consumes an average of 40 litres of diesel and on average 30 trucks which are all tracked leave the depot daily to collect refuse in various suburbs in the capital.
