The construction of the university came after the church was allocated land at Rufaro Longlands Farm, about 10km south of Marondera, for the project.

The multi-million-dollar learning institution, to be called Anglican University in Zimbabwe, will specialise mainly in medical sciences and other disciplines.

The Methodist Church in Zimbabwe has also announced plans to build another university at Waddilove High School in the same province.

In July this year, Parliament passed a Bill giving the nod for the establishment of another State university in Marondera meant to specialise in agricultural studies. The Bill now awaits President Robert Mugabe’s assent.

CPCA spokesperson Precious Shumba said church leader Bishop Chad Gandiya and Mashonaland East Provincial Affairs minister Retired Brigadier-General Ambrose Mutinhiri will officiate at the ground-breaking ceremony.

“Anglican University is becoming a reality. On Saturday, all roads lead to Marondera, where the university would be built. We congratulate Dr Nicholas Chad Gandiya for a determined effort at breaking new ground for the Anglican Church,” he said.

The establishment of the university could have been done five years ago, but was stalled by the long-running legal battles over ownership of church properties between Gandiya and excommunicated Bishop Nolbert Kunonga. Kunonga eventually lost the court battle.
