Chitembwe makes a comeback exactly three years after parting ways with the Green Machine on August 2012.

Chitembwe replaces Mark Mathe, who reverts to his role as assistant coach of the Green Machine.

He was unveiled at a press conference in the capital, which was attended by club president Farai Jere and other board members.

The club hierarchy was brutally frank with the new technical team declaring that they will not hesitate to wield the axe if they fail to achieve a a top four finish.

Board chair, Lewis Uriri said the Caps United family believed in continuity and after careful analysis decided to rope in Chitembwe to work with Mathe in a bid to ensure the Harare giants remained one of the top four teams.

“Caps United have been playing very well. They are one of the best teams in the league. It’s only that results have not been coming. Let me hasten to say that we are not Caps FC or Caps Rovers. We are Caps United and believe in continuity and we have, after careful consideration made small changes to the technical team. Lloyd Chitembwe is now the head coach on an interim basis for the remaining nine games and will be assisted by Mark Mathe. Msiska remains the goalkeepers’ coach and Fungai Tostao Kwashi will be in charge of the juniors, while Majaha Ndlovu is the fitness trainer. This is the technical team that will drive Caps United with a set target of a top four finish. I believe we have one of the best technical team,” said Uriri.

He reiterated that should the technical team fail, it will face the axe.

“At Caps United we have a three year strategic plan that will transform the club. I think we have the best qualified board in the country if not in southern Africa. The team has been playing well only that results have not been coming. But we believe the results will start coming soon,” said Uriri.

Mathe said he had no problems working with Chitembwe describing him as a very intelligent coach. “I have no problem in working with Chitembwe.

“He is more experienced than I am. He has been watching me and I will be happy to work with him. He is very intelligent and can help us achieve our objective,” said Mathe.

Chitembwe said he was used to pressure and expressed confidence he will be able to achieve the set target by the end of the campaign.

Caps United have been struggling for fluency recently, with their strikers firing blanks. They have picked up just two points from their last three matches and after suffering a 2-1 defeat to Chapungu at Ascot Stadium on Sunday, the club leadership decided to reshuffle the technical team.

The Harare giants are seventh on the league table with 30 points.
