A goal apiece in either side of halftime by Chapungu captain Philip Marufu and Allen Tavarwisa outweighed a solitary strike by veteran forward Lenard Tsipa.

The result propels the army side to 28 points while the Green Machine remains on 30 points and are now a distant 13 points behind the log leaders.

Mathe’s pitch side interview with the media was invaded by overzealous supporters protesting that the referee ended the match prematurely when they were still chasing the game.

Chapungu coach John Nyikadzino was happy with maximum points.

“We played well today and my players did exactly what we practiced at training in the build up to this game. Am very happy that we have managed to win after a very long time and our objective of finishing in the top eight remains intact,” Nyikadzino said.

Marufu timed his run to perfection getting to the end of a long ball from midfield before volleying the hosts into the lead after 20 minutes of action.

Five minutes before the breather Tsipa was unfortunate not to level the scoreline when his free kick just outside the box hit the underside of the crossbar.

Tavarwisa doubled Chapungu’s lead in the 56th minute when he tapped in Hillary Mugoniwa’s cross. Blessing Zabula’s afternoon was prematurely ended by referee Makonese Masakadza after an hour of action when he was shown a second yellow card for a reckless lunge on Pineas Bamusi.

Hardlife Zvirekwi was the architect of Caps’ goal when he weaved his magic on the right before pushing the ball into the path of Tsipa who placed his effort beyond Roy Mazingi in goal for Chapungu to pull one back for the visitors.
