Powertel was established 15 years ago and is responsible for telecommunications infrastructure development, virtual private networking, high speed Internet provision, the provision of the most affordable voice service, call centre facilities as well as prepaid electricity aggregation.

In an update yesterday, the company said the prepaid electricity solutions had had a positive impact on the Zimbabwean population in terms of accessibility and convenience.

“Currently, over 73% of electricity revenues are now covered through the Powertel e-vending platform and this has seen a remarkable reduction in queues at ZETDC (Zimbabwe Electricity Transmission and Distribution Company) offices due to the technological advancements done to date,” it said. “Electricity belongs to ZETDC and is aggregated through Powertel.”

Powertel and ZETDC worked tremendously in establishing various channels for Powerplus such as over the counter, point of sales, mobile platforms, Internet platform, kiosks and ATMs.

Powertel has invested in fibre backbone over the pylons to the undersea cable through Mozambique and Botswana.

“This fibre backbone has enabled Zimbabweans to enjoy high speed Internet which is harnessed by connecting to the international Internet exchange in New York, London and Amsterdam.

“Among Powertel new developments is their recently launched voice service which has been fairly received especially by corporates and individuals,” it said.

“The company also recently launched the Earthquake Data promotion which has taken the market by storm with data from $2,50 per gigabyte.”

The telecommunications company was voted the Best ICT company of the year 2014 by the Zimbabwe Business Awards and the most innovative parastatal of the year 2014 (Zimbabwe National Chamber of Commerce) among others.
